Nintendo Switch makes one console work at home and away

Nintendo launches Switch, a tablet-like game system that docks to a television and uses detachable Joy-Con controllers for portable or shared play.

Nintendo Switch launched today in major markets for $299.99. The system moves between a television dock and a 6.2-inch portable screen, carrying the same game session from a living room to a train or campus bench.

Its small Joy-Con controllers attach to the screen, fit into a grip or separate for two-player games. Nintendo says battery life varies from roughly two and a half to six and a half hours. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild leads a lean opening lineup.

Switch’s appeal rests on a clear idea rather than raw specifications: one library can serve both home and handheld play. The compromise is equally clear, since portability constrains screen size, battery and processing power. Strong games and reliable hardware will decide whether the hybrid becomes a durable platform or another short Nintendo experiment.
