GitHub Copilot suggests code inside the editor

GitHub opens a technical preview of Copilot, an editor extension that uses OpenAI Codex to propose functions and lines from comments and context.

GitHub introduced Copilot today as a technical preview for Visual Studio Code. The extension examines comments and surrounding code, then offers lines or complete functions that a programmer can accept, reject or edit.

The system is powered by OpenAI Codex and trained on publicly available source code and natural-language text. GitHub says it works with many frameworks and languages, while performing especially well with Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Ruby and Go.

Copilot makes machine learning part of the ordinary typing loop rather than a separate search tool. That could accelerate repetitive work and expose useful patterns, but its suggestions are only proposals: they may be incorrect, insecure or too similar to code seen during training. The preview will test whether developers save more time than they spend reviewing the machine’s confident guesses.
