Firefox Quantum gives the browser race a fresh contender

Mozilla's major Firefox overhaul concentrates on speed and a redesigned interface, with important consequences for longtime extension users.

Firefox Quantum has arrived with a redesigned interface and substantial work beneath the surface. Mozilla is presenting this as its biggest browser revision in years, with performance improvements intended to be noticeable during ordinary browsing rather than only in a benchmark chart.

The new Photon interface brings a different visual organization to familiar controls. Underneath it, changes to the engine aim to make better use of modern hardware. Mozilla's speed claims are its own measurements, so the useful test for an individual reader remains their actual collection of websites and tabs.

Firefox 57 also changes extension compatibility. People who depend on an older add-on should check for an updated replacement before moving their daily work. A faster browser is welcome, but the tools built around it are part of the decision too.
