GitHub Copilot opens its doors to individual developers

The AI coding assistant is moving beyond its preview, raising practical questions about how suggested code should enter a project.

GitHub Copilot is now available to individual developers following its technical preview. The assistant works alongside coding tools, offering suggestions that can range from a fragment of a line to a larger block of code. Its appeal is the possibility of spending less time on repetitive implementation.

A suggestion is still a proposal. It can fit the immediate text while missing a project's wider assumptions, error cases or conventions. Developers remain responsible for understanding what they accept and for checking it with the same care as other contributions.

The interesting change is in the rhythm of programming. Writing, reviewing and revising may become more closely intertwined when an assistant constantly supplies a possible next step. Whether that produces better work will depend on judgment and verification, not simply on how much code appears on screen.
