The new iPad Pro brings a substantial physical redesign, with 11-inch and 12.9-inch models, Face ID and Apple's A12X Bionic chip. USB-C replaces the Lightning connector, opening a more familiar path for connecting cameras, displays and other equipment.

Apple has also revised the Pencil. The second-generation stylus attaches magnetically and charges wirelessly against the tablet, avoiding the awkward charging arrangement of the original. These small changes could matter considerably to people who draw or annotate throughout the day.

The hardware makes an increasingly persuasive argument for professional use. Software remains the deciding factor: buying a faster tablet does not automatically reproduce a desktop workflow. Prospective buyers should map out how their files, applications and peripherals will work together before treating the iPad as a laptop replacement.
