Amazon Kindle changes the reading device

Amazon introduces Kindle with wireless book delivery, an electronic-ink display, and a store built into the reading device.

The first Kindle is built around an electronic-ink screen, physical page buttons, and a wireless connection that can download books without a computer.

Amazon’s unusual move is to put the bookstore inside the device. Customers can search, buy, and begin reading from the Kindle, while the company handles delivery through its network.

The product is not trying to imitate a laptop. Its purpose is focused reading, and its success depends on selection, pricing, battery life, and whether readers accept a screen that is deliberately less versatile.
