Pixel puts Google's own name on the Android experience

With Pixel, Google is bringing hardware and software design together and making its Assistant a central part of the phone.

Google has introduced Pixel and Pixel XL, placing its own brand at the center of a new smartphone family. The two sizes offer a choice between a five-inch display and a larger 5.5-inch model. Google Assistant is built in, giving voice interaction a prominent role alongside familiar Android applications.

The shift from Nexus is significant. Nexus devices have served as collaborations with handset manufacturers; Pixel is presented as Google's own integrated vision. It gives the company a more direct way to demonstrate how it believes Android should look and behave.

Starting at $649 in the United States, Pixel is entering premium territory. Camera quality, software updates and support will matter as much as the logo. Google now has to sell the complete phone experience, not simply the appeal of its services.
