The Mac Pro returns to an expandable tower
Apple's new workstation puts internal expansion back in the spotlight, alongside a professional display aimed at demanding production work.

Apple has unveiled a new Mac Pro with a tower enclosure and an emphasis on expansion. Intel Xeon processors, extensive memory options and PCI Express slots place it firmly in workstation territory. The company has also announced Pro Display XDR as a companion for professional visual workflows.
The design addresses a basic concern in production environments: the computer must fit the job. Video, audio and three-dimensional work can require specialist cards and changing storage arrangements. An accessible enclosure gives those users options that a tightly integrated consumer machine does not.
This is not a proposal for the ordinary family desktop. Its value will depend on the software and equipment surrounding it, as well as the time it saves on a particular job. For professional Mac users who need internal flexibility, the direction is nevertheless a meaningful change.
