WhatsApp has started a gradual Indian rollout of household and utility bill payments inside its app. The feature connects to the Bharat Connect, or BBPS, network and covers 22,722 billers across 30 categories. Those categories include electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit cards and loan repayments, extending WhatsApp’s existing Indian payment and public-service functions.

Users access the service through the rupee icon on the WhatsApp home screen. They can retrieve upcoming bills, see payment history, manage several accounts with the same provider and choose among UPI, debit card and credit card. Previously paid billers surface in the payments area for quicker repeat use.

Bill payment turns WhatsApp into a more complete transaction hub in one of its largest markets. It also puts routine financial activity beside personal and business conversations, reducing the need to switch among provider apps. The breadth of Bharat Connect gives the release immediate utility, but adoption will depend on trust, reliable bill retrieval and clear handling of failed or disputed payments.
