Microsoft unveiled Xbox One today, presenting its next console as the single input for a living-room screen. Voice commands can move among a game, live television, Skype and entertainment applications, while a new home screen remembers individual users.

The box includes an eight-core processor, 8 GB of memory, a Blu-ray drive and a 500 GB hard disk. A redesigned Kinect sensor ships with the system and tracks movement and speech with greater detail than its Xbox 360 predecessor.

The event spent as much time on television and partnerships as on playable games, a revealing choice. Microsoft is betting that convenience can earn Xbox a permanent place between the cable box and display. Price, launch date and many policies remain unannounced, and players will want a clearer account of software ownership and the game lineup at E3.
