Android 1.6 prepares for a wider range of phones
The new Android SDK adds support for different screen sizes and densities, giving developers more flexibility and more to test.
Google has released the Android 1.6 SDK, giving developers tools for the next version of its mobile platform. Support for a broader range of display sizes and densities is an important change as Android moves beyond its earliest handsets.
A flexible layout cannot assume that every phone has the same screen. Applications need to scale their controls and images sensibly, while keeping text readable and touch targets usable. The SDK gives developers ways to describe those choices, but testing remains part of the work.
For manufacturers, the update makes room for more varied devices. For software teams, it is a reminder that Android is a platform across hardware, rather than a single phone. Building for that variety early may prevent difficult compatibility problems later.
