AWS gives students at 132 universities a free year of Kiro
AWS expanded its Kiro student program to 132 universities in 18 countries, offering one year of access and 1,000 monthly credits without a card.

AWS is offering a free year of Kiro, its AI agent for software engineering, to eligible students at 132 universities across 18 countries. The package includes 1,000 credits per month, access to current models and the browser-based Kiro Web service, with no credit card required. Students can begin through the program’s eligibility and sign-up page.
The global expansion follows a March pilot involving 11 universities in two countries. AWS says participants used Kiro for projects including an accessibility application for visually impaired users and a voice-operated wellness platform. The wider program now reaches schools across Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America and North America, increasing the pilot’s institutional footprint twelvefold while preserving a structured allowance intended to support complete projects rather than short trials.
Kiro emphasizes specification-driven development, in which a user describes requirements and the agent helps turn them into working software. Giving students sustained access could make agent-assisted development a routine part of coursework and portfolios before they enter the workforce.
